This position is located within the Ship Repair Business Unit of BAE Systems., Inc., Platforms & Services Sector. The position will be based in Norfolk VA, but will involve 50% travel to all BAE Systems Ship Repair operating sites:

This position applies the principles and practices of industrial engineering to ship maintenance, repair, overhaul and conversion operations in large, complex and fully-facilitized shipyards. The position will be responsible to the Vice president of Operations, the Director of Business Transformation, and to the five shipyard General Managers for the streamlining of shipyard material receipt, handling, transportation, fabrication, repair, production, installation and test processes, across all phases of ship maintenance periods, including work on ships in both a waterborne state and in a drydock state.
This position requires the analysis of sequence of operations and work flow, and process re-design/re-development to improve efficiencies in plant operations, production facilities and equipment layouts. The position will employ analytical and empirical methods for efficient and/or optimal utilization of production facilities and personnel. The successful candidate will conduct studies pertaining to cost control, cost reduction, inventory control, and production record systems. The successful candidate will develop and deliver training programs concerning proposed operational changes associated with process improvement and efficiency. Where applicable, the employee will assist the Director of Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) in establishing accident prevention measures.
This position also requires strong communication, interpersonal and presentation skills, including the ability to constructively engage, brief and influence senior shipyard personnel, including but not limited to general managers and directors. The objective of such engagements is to achieve approvals and commitments to incorporate recommended operational improvements. The position also requires the ability to constructively work with line managers to implement, guide and monitor effectiveness of approved recommendations.
Typical Education & Experience
Typically a Bachelor's Degree and 8 years work experience or equivalent experience
Required Skills and Education
- Minimum eight (8) years directly involved in the practice of industrial engineering
- Accredited Bachelor s degree in Industrial Engineering (B.S.I.E.)
Working in industrial conditions such as factories, fabrication facilities, assembly lines, workshops, storage buildings, service buildings
Working in a marine industrial environment, including waterborne shipboard conditions and ships located in graving, floating or marine railway drydocks.
All industrial areas contain typical industrial hazards such as high energy systems (electrical power, compressed gases), suspended/swinging loads, obstructions, industrial chemicals, fire hazards, etc. Applicant agrees to comply with all BAE Systems safety requirements to ensure employee safety in such an environment.
Applicant must be capable of walking in and around shipyard facilities, up/down building staircases, and shipboard environments to include ladders, mast work, passageways, confined spaces, tanks and associated staging.
Applicant may also be required to perform desk-oriented tasks and office work such as receipt, generation and delivery of electronic correspondence, employee administration, compilation/analysis of data and metrics, and preparation of briefings. Accordingly, this activity requires repetitive movement of hands and fingers.
Preferred Skills and Education
Additional desirable qualifications for this position include some or all of the following:
Advanced graduate study in industrial engineering, operations management, business management, systems management, or statistics
Professional engineering certification or license in industrial engineering
Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
